Medical glossary
General information, not an individual diagnosis or treatment recommendation. Decisions require review by a licensed clinician.
Second opinion
An independent clinical review of an existing diagnosis or treatment plan. It may agree with the original plan or identify questions to explore.
Multidisciplinary team (MDT)
Clinicians from different specialties discuss the information relevant to a patient’s care. The team composition depends on the clinical question.
Informed consent
Ask about expected benefits, risks, alternatives, the option of no treatment, follow-up and care after returning home. Do not interrupt current treatment while exploring overseas options.
Follow-up care
Arrange discharge records, rehabilitation and follow-up at home.
Screening
More tests do not always mean better care. Screening should be matched to personal risk and evidence-based guidance. Unnecessary tests can lead to false positives, overdiagnosis and further procedures. Review the package with a clinician before booking.
Clinical assessment
A qualified clinician evaluates suitability and possible next steps.
